Dental Surgery, Implants

It is the placement of artificial tooth into the jaw by periodontist /gum specialist to hold a replacement tooth/bridge. Dental implant is a good option for people who have lost teeth due to periodontal disease (infection in the tissue that supports the teeth), an injury or any other reason.  It is a best treatment for replacing missing tooth. A pilot hole is made in jaw where tooth is missing followed by drilling & then incision is made over the crest/top of the site, followed by the tooth root implant made of titanium is placed into the bone socket of missing tooth.  Different types of implants are used now a days:-

1.  Endosteal (in the bone):- This implant is used as an alternative for individuals with bridges or removable dentures. It includes screws, cylinder/blades surgically placed in the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more artificial teeth.

2. Subperiosteal (on the bone):- Mainly used for individuals having minimal bone height & who are unable to wear conventional dentures. It is placed on the top of the jaw, protruding through the gums to hold artificial teeth.

The complete implant procedure along with crown placement is done in 3 settings (In 1st- initial assessment including medical history, X-rays & clinical examination is done; 2nd – Implant is placed & in 3rd -temporary crown is placed for a period of 4-6 months, to be subsequently changed to ceramic crowns/bridges.

With new technologies, it is even possible to replace full jaw with dental implants.

Dental implant is better option than dentures as it integrates into the structure of gum bone- prevent the bone loss, gum recession; neighboring teeth is not altered & above all it looks & feel like own teeth so individual feels confident.
