Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction/ Reduction Mammoplasty

It is a surgical procedure which involves the reduction in size of breasts to remove breast fat, glandular tissue & skin to achieve a breast size in proportion to the body & reduce physical pain, discomfort which is caused due to overly large breasts. This procedure is typically performed on women, but may also be performed on men suffering from gynecomastia (abnormal enlargement of mammary glands). It is an individual’s choice. Before the procedure complete medical history, family history is taken, medication details, previous surgeries details, physical examination done for placement of nipples & areola & mainly the expectations & desired outcome is discussed.

Breast reduction surgery is done usually under general anesthesia but for smaller reduction, the surgery may be done with local anesthesia. In this procedure 3 cuts are made (Firstly around the areola, from the areola down to crease under breast & across the lower crease of the breast); extra fat & breast tissues are removed -areola & nipple are moved to a higher position followed by closing of the stitches to reshape the breast.

Main risks for this procedure are difficult breast feeding, loss of feeling in nipple area, healing is prolonged due to large scars & sometimes difference in size of breasts after surgery.

Prognosis is good; a special supportive bra is to be worn for few months to reshape the breasts. It takes few weeks for initial recovery but 6 months-1 year for body to completely adjust to new breast size.
