Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation/Breast Enlargement/ Breast Enhancement/ Breast Implants-

In young women female breast may remain small due to genetic reasons (underdevelopment of glands). In grown up women, due to multiple pregnancies & repeated lactation breasts may lose their volume. With advancing age breasts can become small & sagging so some women prefer breast enhancement.  Breast Augmentation is a cosmetic surgery done under general anesthesia using implants which helps to shape & increase the breast size to the desired size.

Different types of implants currently used include:

Silicone gel filled; Saline filled; Shape implants like” pear shaped”.

Implants are placed either under the breast or under the pectoral muscle (chest muscle) & incisions (underneath the breast, around the areola- darkened area around the nipple or incision through the armpit) vary based on type of implant, degree of enlargement desired, anatomy of breast ; patient & doctor preference. Prior to surgery complete medical evaluation is done which includes medical history, lab testing, baseline mammography, stop smoking & avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs as they can increase bleeding. There are some risks & complications like unfavorable scarring, infection, poor healing of incisions, Implant leakage/rupture, persisting pain, wrinkling of skin over the implant…associated with breast augmentation, so it’s entirely up to the patient to decide for this surgery. Post surgical recovery period is around 24-48 hours with an additional reduced activity for few days. Breast implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime so future surgery may be needed.
